NISSAN X-TRAIL
The Super Production class Nissan X-Trail driven by Yoshio Ikemachi and Jun Mitsuhashi in this yearfs Dakar is a improved version of the T2 machine entered in the 2001 Rally by Thierry Delavergne and others from Team Nissan Dessoude. The engine hood, doors, tailgate, and other parts of the body have been replaced by lightweight glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), and a roll cage has been fitted around the interior of the cockpit. This Super Production class machine has three spare tires lined up side-by-side inside the rear gate.

The VQ35-type engine is a gasoline-powered 3.5-liter V6 fitted with a 32-mm air restrictor, other than a control computer, and original exhaust system, the main parts of the engine remain normal. The five-speed manual gearbox is equipped with a two-stage auxiliary transmission. The power transfer has a fixed 50:50 distribution between front and back, using a part-time 4WD with no center differential. The front suspension strut is based on a steel tubing A-arm, and the rear suspension is a double-trailing arm-type rigid setup that positions the vehicle on a horizontal plane by lateral rods.

At the weight of 1,750 kg, the X-Trail is among the lightest of the 3.5-liter vehicles. Its main features are a simple structure with superior aerodynamics that benefit from a relatively small front projected area. Top speed is one of the highest among T2 class vehicles. The X-Trail attracted considerable attention in the 2002 Dakar as the choice of popular French singer Johnny Hallyday, and this year, Jean-Paul Belmonde has also entered with a six-speed X-Trail.
